Burgundy, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and vineyards, offers a palette of colors during the autumn season that will surely amaze visitors. The vibrant hues that emerge from the forests and wine regions testify to a breathtaking natural beauty. In this article, we will present three must-visit destinations in Burgundy, perfect for fully appreciating this autumn color festival in 2023.
The Morvan Regional Natural Park
Located in the heart of Burgundy, the Morvan Regional Natural Park is a true green jewel where shades of orange, red, and yellow flourish in autumn. This preserved region offers vast forests, where beech trees and oaks adorn themselves with vibrant colors, creating a living tableau every year.
The hiking trails of the Morvan invite you to explore this lush landscape while lakes, such as the Lake Settons, reflect the chromatic spectacle on their peaceful surface. Visiting this park between mid-October and early November is ideal for admiring all the variations of colors at their peak.
The Vineyards of the Côte d’Or
The Côte d’Or, one of the most famous wine regions in Burgundy, transforms into an Impressionist canvas in autumn. The rows of vines take on golden and copper hues, offering an enchanting landscape, particularly visible along the Route des Grands Crus. This nearly 60-kilometer route, linking Dijon to Santenay, allows the discovery of picturesque villages and vineyards while admiring a warm and captivating color palette.
The chosen moments to visit the Clos de Vougeot or admire the hill of Corton with its autumnal shades are particularly appreciated, each site providing a unique atmosphere for visitors. The late harvests that take place there also offer a privileged opportunity to explore the local wine culture while enjoying the autumn beauty.
The Cîteaux Forest
The Cîteaux Forest, located near Dijon, is another enchanting place to observe autumn colors. With its more than 3,600 hectares of woods, this forest reveals a true patchwork of colors during this period. The oaks, beeches, and other sometimes lesser-known species transform together into a living painting, captivating all who venture there.
The marked trails of this forest provide freedom of exploration while allowing for the admiration of the vibrant shades that adorn each tree. Cycling or walking strolls enable the observation of local wildlife, particularly deer and wild boar that can be seen in this idyllic setting.
The three locations presented, namely the Morvan Regional Natural Park, the vineyards of the Côte d’Or, and the Cîteaux Forest, illustrate how Burgundy is a privileged region for nature lovers and beautiful colors. Each of these places offers a unique experience, punctuated by breathtaking landscapes, outdoor activities, and cultural discoveries. During one of my autumn visits, I had the chance to participate in a grape harvest day in the vineyards of the Côte d’Or. The spectacle of the golden vines, along with the friendly atmosphere of the harvests, added a memorable dimension to my discovery of this region. These memories, combined with the beauty of the landscapes, comprise unforgettable moments that I will always cherish. Autumn in Burgundy truly is a remarkable event for the senses, alternating between the excitement of the harvest and the admiration of the changing landscape, a page of history in every season. Capturing these experiences is part of an enriching journey that every visitor should consider when autumn gently arrives in Burgundy.
