Contes

A village perched between mountains and valleys

Nestled between Mount Macaron to the south, rising to 800 meters, and Mount Férion to the north, reaching 1400 meters, the municipality of Contes offers a unique panorama of the Paillon Valley. This historic village, one of the oldest in the Nice region, also includes three picturesque hamlets: Sclos, La Vernéa, and La Pointe, where pine trees, mimosas, and olive trees dot the landscape.

A village steeped in history

Perched on a rocky spur, Contes always seems to watch over the valley. In the past, its ramparts protected the village from pirates and Barbarians. Today, it is tourist infrastructures that surround this historical gem. Despite a moderate tourist influx, Contes retains its authenticity and offers treasures from another time. Among them is the East Tower of the ancient ramparts, now transformed into the bell tower of the church Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. This 16th-century church, located in the heart of the village, is also complemented by a magnificent Renaissance fountain dating back to 1587.

An Italian charm

Contes retains an undeniable charm reminiscent of Italian architecture, with its covered passages, trompe-l’œil facades, arcades, and old washhouses. The winding alleys and terraces provide breathtaking views of the valley. If you visit the village in summer, take the time to sip a drink on one of these terraces while admiring the landscape. However, be prepared for a demanding climb to reach these viewpoints, rewarded by stunning panoramas.
