A confidential loop in the heart of the Estérel

Behind the peaceful streets of Théoule-sur-Mer, a discreet path rises towards the Rocher des Monges, a natural promontory offering a stunning panorama between the Mediterranean, the Pre-Alps of Azur and the distant peaks of the Mercantour. The route follows a 6.2 km hiking loop, perfectly suited for a half-day outing.

In winter, the hike becomes magical. The month of February, at the height of the mimosa bloom, bathes the hills in a bright yellow and a unique scent.

Departure from Théoule: warm-up in the valley

The departure is located in the village center, where a few parking areas allow for easy parking in the low season. After reaching Rue Jean-Baptiste Pastor, the progression is leisurely along the DFCI track.

The terrain quickly becomes typical of the Estérel: mineral, rocky, with some more airy sections along the ascent. It is better to equip yourself with sturdy shoes, even if the hike does not present any major technical difficulty.

GR®51 and Col de Théoule: at the crossroads

Shortly after departure, a path branches off to the right in the Vallon de l’Autel, then joins the GR®51, marked in red and white. This shaded segment leads to the Col de Théoule, where several paths converge. Here, you remain along the hillside, on well-marked paths, sometimes bordered by shrubs and mimosas in bloom depending on the season.

The gentle climb to the Rocher des Monges

Continuing on the GR®, the ascent goes on until approaching the Rocher des Monges. Two options are available:
• climb directly up the face, steeper but faster,
• or go around it to the left, for a more gradual and stable ascent.

Arriving at the summit, the view is breathtaking: Théoule, the bay of Cannes, the azure mountains, and even the snows of the Mercantour. The ochre rock beneath your feet contrasts with the blue sky and the sea in the distance.

Panoramic variant and return to the village

The path continues to a second rock, lower but just as remarkable for photography enthusiasts. Then, the descent is gentle along the GR®, until the entrance of the village. A last fork on an unmarked path, to the right of the road, avoids the asphalt and passes through a pedestrian tunnel beneath the railway. Caution if the sea level is high: the area may be partially submerged after heavy rains.

The return to the port and the beach concludes this loop, passing by the colorful facades and boats of Théoule.
