A unique religious architecture in Europe
Overlooking the Rhône, the Palais des Papes in Avignon proudly dominates the city from the rock of Doms. Built between 1335 and 1352, this colossal building is anything but a simple palace: it embodies a center of power, a fortress, and a major spiritual site of the Middle Ages.
The building rises on 15,000 m² of surface, equivalent to four Gothic cathedrals. Its massive silhouette, flanked by imposing towers, immediately evokes the grandeur of the popes of Avignon who succeeded one another there. In total, seven popes resided in the city of the count between 1309 and 1377.
The heart of papal power in exile
In response to the turmoil shaking Rome at the beginning of the 14th century, the popes chose to settle in Avignon. Clement V inaugurated this new era in 1309, followed by John XXII, Benedict XII, and Clement VI. Each left their mark on the edifice: Benedict XII built the more austere Palais Vieux, while Clement VI transformed it into a sumptuous residence with the Palais Neuf.
Inside, the palace’s rooms still testify to this rich past. Some have preserved remarkable frescoes, created by Italian and French artists of the 14th century.

A major place of living culture
Today, the Palais des Papes is not just a witness of the past. It also plays a role in contemporary cultural life. Since 1947, it has hosted temporary exhibitions of modern and classical art. Works by Picasso, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, and Nicolas Mignard have been exhibited there, confirming the artistic significance of the site.
It is also in this majestic setting that the Festival d’Avignon took root, which has become one of the largest theater festivals in the world.
A journey through time with the Histopad
The visit route is enhanced by the Histopad, a digital tablet that immerses visitors in augmented reality. Thanks to 3D reconstructions of the rooms, it becomes possible to walk through the Palais as it was in the 14th century.
Scenes of medieval life, reconstructions of furniture, and audio comments allow for complete immersion, appreciated by both history enthusiasts and families.

A stroll through the papal gardens
At the back of the monument, the gardens of the Palais des Papes offer a green retreat in the heart of the city. Restored according to medieval practices, these landscaped areas blend fruit trees, flower meadows, and botanical species from the 14th century.
The Pope’s Garden, a true haven of peace, directly adjoined the papal apartments, while the Urban V Orchard is now open to walkers through a combined ticket offer.
