In an era where social networks play a prominent role in our lives, the deputy from Alpes-Maritimes, Christelle d’Intorni, has decided to raise the alarm concerning the cyberbullying she has been a victim of via Twitter, now called X, a platform run by Elon Musk. After experiencing devastating online attacks, she recently obtained a ruling in favor of a request for the identification of the accounts responsible for this harassment. A battle that raises many questions about the responsibility of social networks in regulating the behavior of their users.

The ruling of the Nice court

In a landmark ruling, the judicial court of Nice ordered X to provide Christelle d’Intorni with the personal data of five anonymous accounts that participated in her online harassment in 2021. This decision, as X must communicate this information under penalty of a fine of 500 euros per day of delay, represents a turning point in the fight against digital harassment on social networks. D’Intorni hopes that this victory will serve as a precedent to facilitate legal recourse for other similar victims.

Critique of moderation on X

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, the platform has been accused of loosening its moderation rules, thus allowing hate speech to proliferate. D’Intorni, although a member of a party generally in favor of Musk, questions this libertarian vision of freedom of expression which, according to her, seems to justify harassment. She calls for a reassessment of moderation policies on X, emphasizing that freedom of expression should not become a pretext for hate.

A call for legislative action

Beyond her own experience, Christelle d’Intorni advocates for legislative reform to facilitate legal actions against online platforms. She has submitted a bill in this regard, aimed at simplifying the judicial process when victims seek justice against electronic harassment. Her lawyer, also her partner, highlights the difficulty in obtaining information from social networks, with X facing increasing criticism for its lack of cooperation.

A voice for victims

Christelle d’Intorni does not hesitate to share her experience to raise public awareness about the dangers of cyberbullying. She stated that the harassment she suffered was so violent that she emerged deeply affected psychologically. Her determination to act concerns not just her personal case, but also aims to send a strong message to young users of these platforms who are not always prepared to face such hostilities.

An uncertain but determined future

Despite the complexities and potential resistance, D’Intorni remains determined to continue her fight against cyberbullying. She is aware of the criticisms that may arise, even from her own camp, but she refuses to turn a blind eye to what is happening on X. For her, leaving the platform would not be the solution, as she wants to use it to inform and engage in debate around these crucial issues.

Despite the challenges, her fight is primarily a contribution to the protection of users and the struggle for a healthy democratic debate. In the face of the rise of cyberbullying, she hopes that her approach will make the voices of many victims heard and encourage serious reflection on the responsibility of social networks.
