This Wednesday morning, the Alpes-Maritimes are facing particularly difficult winter conditions, with snow and black ice impacting the state of roads. Here you can find out the status of the different routes, recommendations for traveling safely, and the most affected areas.
Winter Weather: Current Road Conditions in the Alpes-Maritimes
This morning, the Alpes-Maritimes are under the charm – or rather the rigor – of a snowstorm that does not leave motorists indifferent. Significant snowfall has been reported, particularly above 1,100 meters in altitude, where conditions are becoming complicated. In several areas, special equipment such as chains are recommended, and in some cases mandatory, to ensure the safety of drivers.
Estéron/Préalpes
In the Estéron and Préalpes area, the situation is particularly delicate. Special equipment is recommended starting at 1,300 meters in altitude. Warning messages highlight that the road in the Gréolières sector is currently difficult, making travel arduous. On the other hand, areas such as Roquesteron, Saint-Auban, Séranon, and Coursegoules remain accessible under normal conditions, but caution is advised.
Haut-Var/Cians/Daluis
The situation complicates in the Haut-Var sector, where special equipment is mandatory from 1,300 meters due to a risk of black ice. The roads in the Entraunes and Valberg sectors are classified as difficult, requiring increased attention from motorists. This may cause delays for those taking these routes. Meanwhile, in Guillaumes, the situation is stabilizing, and the road is again normal for travel.
Paillon/Turini
In the Paillon/Turini sector, safety measures are also in place. Here, special equipment is mandatory from 1,100 meters due to a risk of black ice. Although the roads in Berre-les-Alpes and Contes provide normal conditions, the Turini sector suffers from difficult conditions, greatly complicating travel and calling for vigilance.
Roya/Bévéra
The Roya/Bévéra sector is also drawing attention, with special equipment recommended due to the risks of black ice. The road to Tende is tricky, and this poses risks for road users. While Breil-sur-Roya and Menton maintain normal access conditions, some areas like Sospel and Castérino require a love for adventure, as they are classified as difficult.
Pays grassois, Moyen Var, Tinée and Vésubie valleys
The valleys of Pays grassois, Moyen Var, as well as those of Tinée and Vésubie are not spared by black ice, adding a layer of uncertainty to travel conditions. Motorists are therefore urged to exercise increased caution on these more exposed roads.
Littoral Strip
On the other hand, in the littoral strip, there is little to report. Travel conditions are normal there, providing a welcome break in the overall context. However, it is still prudent to follow weather announcements to track the evolution of climatic conditions.
Winter Closures
During winter, some roads experience temporary closures, notably the Col du Buis and the access road to the hamlet of Tourres. Routes such as the col des Champs and the col de la Cayolle remain inaccessible, rendering many itineraries impractical.
Long-term Closures/Disruptions
The RD 6204 at the Tunnel de Tende has been closed since October 2, 2020, due to a degraded roadway, creating additional inconveniences in this area. Users must plan their routes accordingly.
