In Nice, a monumental statue of Joan of Arc, recently installed, finds itself at the center of a political conflict. Erected with pride, this sculpture, rooted in our heritage, is now deemed too identity-focused by the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes. The latter has initiated steps to remove the work, provoking a strong reaction from both artists and citizens. The controversy surrounding this statue raises questions about the place of art and collective memory in the French socio-political landscape.

An artwork at the heart of a storm

Located at the edge of the church dedicated to the Saint, the 4.5-meter-high statue, made entirely of bronze and gilded with fine gold, symbolizes not only the heroism of Joan of Arc but also represents an ambitious project by the artist collective Atelier Missor. Serving the metropolis, this work was commissioned to highlight a strong vision of cultural identity. However, its installation in October 2024 immediately sparked debates about its symbolism and its connection to sometimes controversial movements.

A contested administrative decision

Prefect Hugues Moutouh, due to his affiliation with the hard right, quickly approached the administrative court. According to him, the contract worth 170,000 euros awarded to Atelier Missor was granted without competition, which calls into question the legitimacy of this public commission. In this context, he mentions a form of cancel culture that disrupts the French artistic landscape. His position provokes indignation and mobilization within the opposition, which accuses the prefect of instrumentalizing this matter for ideological purposes.

A symbol of resistance against the administration

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, also condemns this decision, calling for a popular subscription to support Atelier Missor and defend the statue of Joan of Arc. Indeed, the statue holds symbolic importance, beyond its aesthetics, embodying a collective memory to which many Niçois are attached. The complaints from artists and citizens crystallize around the idea that historical figures like Joan of Arc should be free to rise, thereby challenging sometimes questionable bureaucratic decisions.

The reactions of the artist collective

In light of this situation, Atelier Missor has made its voice heard. In a statement, they assert that their creation aimed to revive heroic figures from the past, thereby threatening the comfort of some ideologues who deem their art too “identity-focused.” They argue that the beauty and grandeur of a work like that of Joan of Arc should be celebrated, not stifled by petty political considerations.

Towards an uncertain future for the statue

As of January 14, 2025, the decision to remove the statue has become a reality for the judges of the administrative court. Pending a potential appeal, the dismantling process is already underway. With the promise of the opposition to mobilize, as well as popular support, the battle for the preservation of this emblematic monument is not yet over. The story of this statue thus becomes a reflection of a society grappling with memory, history, and ideology.
