At 11:41 AM, the ground shook the Ubaye Valley with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located near Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye, at a depth of only 4 km. The waves reached the Côte d’Azur, prompting alerts among the residents of Nice. Although several tremors have been observed in this area over the past few months, this one particularly caught attention.

An active seismic region

Christophe Larroque, a geologist at the GéoAzur laboratory, explains that this succession of earthquakes is not surprising. The southeast of France is a seismic region where faults are particularly active, especially at sea, off the coast of Nice and Monaco. These regions, integrated into the Alpine chain, continue to actively deform, making earthquakes quite frequent.

The significance of the December 9 earthquake

For Larroque, this earthquake is classified as moderate, as although it is slightly stronger than average for this area, it does not pose a major danger. In fact, earthquakes of such intensity occur on average every four to five years in the area. Nonetheless, it is essential for residents to be aware of the risks surrounding them.

The question of seismic prediction is just as concerning. According to the specialist, predicting earthquakes remains a challenge. Currently, no technology exists to accurately predict when an earthquake will occur. Research focuses on characterizing faults and the types of earthquakes that may occur. The safety of buildings remains a crucial issue. Larroque emphasizes that earthquakes themselves do not cause casualties, but it is the collapse of structures that can be deadly. Anti-seismic building codes have been established to ensure the resilience of new buildings. However, the majority of older constructions, often the most vulnerable, have not been subjected to these regulations.

In the face of earthquakes, it is also paramount to adopt the right reflexes. Taking shelter away from windows and anything that might fall is essential. The French Central Seismological Bureau recommends that witnesses of these events share their experiences to better understand these phenomena.
